Property History

Building A was built in 2000 and has steel frame construction with metal roofing and siding which makes it flame retardant. The property is surrounded by chain link fencing and is entered through a key pad actuated gate. Outside storage for boats, RVs, etc is also in this area.

Building B which houses the offices for Whitehorse Self Storage and Sky Signs Balloons (www.skysignsballoons.com) and Fast Shelter (www.fastshelter.com). Built in 1907 as the Madco foundry, it has survived several changes of usage and ownership over the years.

When you enter the Whitehorse Self Storage office it will seem that you have gone back in time. Hanging on the walls, stacked on the floor and leaning in the corners are tools from yesteryear. From saws to block planes to barrel clamps to old cameras there seems to be echos of times past. Collected over the years from auctions and and barn sales, these tools reflect the workers who preceded us and who have left us such a rich heritage. You can almost hear the grunts of a farmer twisting a wood bit through 12" timbers while he builds his barn. Or the soft whisper of the draw knife as it shaves a piece of oak into furniture. We try to remember our past while we forge our future.

On the left are two man tree saws, barrel clamps and monkey wrenches. Also, there are two war model floor sweepers made from wood because of the scarcity of metal during WWII.   In the center are wood molding planes which were used for making decorative molding to go around the baseboard of a room. There are also shoe lathes which were used to make shoes. Each shoe size needed its own lathe. The large toothed saw is an ice saw used for cutting ice from a pond or river in the winter which was then placed in an ice house for cold storage of food year round.

On the left are early cameras including box cameras made by Gem, Afga and Brownie. Additionally, there are bellows type folding cameras by Kodak and Actus.

The old barn door holds various wood planes, a brace hand drill and a slide nail puller. The wood planes were used to smooth the edges of boards so that they lay together closely while the brace hand drill was used to bore holes through wood. There is also an engine valve lapper tool used to fit valves into in an engine perfectly.

In the far-ground is a  20 ton railroad jack which was used to lift rail cars for maintenance. In the near-ground are various sized rope pulleys used in farm work for lifting hay bales in the barn.

A display of pressing irons.  Heated on the stove and then put to work taking the wrinkles out of clothes, the irons weigh about 10 lbs a piece.

A very large pulley probably used in an industrial setting along with a two man cross cut saw.
